A New Sweater for Mama

Nordstromlace

Pre-baby, there were two types of sweaters in my closet – cashmere and embellished. Wool had always made me itch, so growing up I kept warm in the winter by layering a gigantic sweatshirt over a couple of long-sleeve tees. (Obviously, this did not make me date worthy for quite a long time). When I finally discovered cashmere, I started stocking up on the precious sweaters during after-Christmas sales. J.Crew makes some of my favorites, especially with their gorgeous colors.

Now that I have a baby, spit-up is a common occurrence, and I did not want to start racking up unnecessary dry-cleaning costs. I’ve tried hand-washing a couple of cashmere sweaters in the past, and knew that was a mistake (the fine material becomes fuzzy and worn looking).

As for my embellished pieces…well let’s just say that Little V does not enjoy rubbing her face on rhinestones.

Nursing-Friendly Dresses for a Wedding (at Banana Republic!)

A friend (and mother) recently shared her dilemma in finding dresses that are both wedding appropriate and nursing friendly, so I promised I would spend some time hunting for several possibilities that she could consider.

Surprisingly, I came up empty-handed on Nordstrom’s website. A nursing-friendly dress usually has one of the following details: [Read more…]

Something Old and Something You

Leopardblouse I had to attend a work event recently, and felt completely uninspired as I stared at the rotation of five tops I wear on a weekly basis. Striped shirt, gray tee, black tee, black tank, black long-sleeved shirt. I considered the red dress I wore in my last post, but I knew it would be far too dressy.

I had long taken what was maternity-friendly out of my closet and hung them onto a clothing rack for simplification purposes. Opening my closet door and staring at my complete wardrobe again felt like a foreign act, though it was only a mere six months ago that I was still able to wear most of these clothes. Old friends, I thought, will any of you take me back?

Color Cravings: Banana Republic Moto Jacket in Pink

BR pink moto-3

One of the most common questions I’ve gotten during my pregnancy is, “Have you had any food cravings? Aversions?” I have a notorious food palate to begin with (I prefer “airing” my bowl of cheerios overnight over munching on fresh ones), so I suppose my friends were wondering if I would have any interesting stories to tell them. But aside from one week where I wanted fresh orange juice every morning (who doesn’t?), I’ve been eating the same foods I always have. No late runs to Safeway for ice cream, or a desire to chew on rubber (I hear that’s a thing).

What did happen in my first trimester though, is that I suddenly could not stand wearing the color olive. Sadly, this was soon after I decided to keep my olive lace jacket from my first Stitch Fix box, so I never got to wear it. It’s shoved into a dark corner of my closet, along with my go-to Ann Taylor olive green blouse, and another olive green jacket. The idea of wearing any of those things right now makes me feel physically ill. Luckily, I still think olive looks great on other people, so at least I can do my job as a stylist normally. Distressed shorts + Tweed blazer

Living in San Francisco, I rarely get the chance to wear shorts. I had friends who came to visit from the hot and humid East Coast recently, and lamented over the fact they forgot to bring their jackets. It’s California, so isn’t it sunny all the time? Nope. Not in San Francisco. Even in the summer, we frequently need a second layer (travel tip if you ever visit my foggy city!).

So when the weather finally reached the 70s, I eagerly pulled out my new pair of LOFT distressed shorts. There’s something about being in my 30s and feeling more age-appropriate in a longer hemline. When Mr. Wonderful and I did our great purging recently, I realized I hadn’t touched my shorts with a 3” inseam in several years. When I do wear shorts nowadays, I favor Bermuda styles and capris. My shorter shorts were some of the few things Mr. Wonderful did not want me to get rid of!
